Attendee: yknow, back in 2006 Mark Hamill was here. At the time he was doing signatures for like $30
Me: that sounds like bullshit* but continue
Attendee: I’m serious! Back before cons blew up, autographs were cheap. Anyway, everyone comes up to him saying “Do the Joker! do the Joker!!” And he would cover his face with his hands and do the laugh. This one dude comes up, dressed in full Joker getup. He goes in to shakes Mark’s hand, and he had a legit, honest-to-god buzzer in his hand. Hamill jumped right out of his seat. Scared the shit out of him. He says, “you gotta warn me next time!” And Joker never breaks character. He says “Well then what’s the fun in that?!”
Me: yikes
Attendee: yeah. You get kicked out for that kind of stuff.
*It sounds like bullshit in 2018, but back in 2006- which is not even that long ago- the convention scene and culture was very very different. Pop culture icons like Mark Hamill would actually sell autographs for that cheap!
