To prevent theft, all library DVDs are in protective magnetic locks that staff has to manually unlock. But the cases themselves are cheap plastic, and sometimes don’t work right.
Coworker who doesn’t usually work in circulation: Matt, I’m having trouble with unlocking this DVD. Do you just swipe it through the thing multiple times, or…?
Me, whispering to the DVD case and petting it: It’s okay baby, you open when you’re ready.
I slide the DVD case through the magnetic unlocking device (decoupler). It doesn’t open.
Then I bang it violently and loudly on the table. Swipe it again, and it works.
Patron: Ahh, violence is the key.
Coworker: I get it. Be nice to it then beat it. Good strategy. That’s how I handle my kids.
Me: Yeah, that makes sense.
