Me: You’ve been coming here every weekday for weeks, kid. What’s your deal? We have long-term volunteers, sure, but I’ve never seen someone this intently dedicated to putting books on shelves without a paycheck.
Me: Well, even people getting paid have less drive than you. What’s up?
Volunteer: Oh, I’m doing my community service. You know. For like, high school.
Me: Ahhh, there it is. And here I thought you just really liked us.
Volunteer: It’s my last year, so. Gotta do the time.
Me: Library was a good choice. We’re lucky to have you. And congratulations!
Me, quietly: High school is the fucking worst.
