Patron checks out Split.
Me: Aw man. Split is one of my all-time favorites.
Patron: Yeah, it’s a good one. They made a third part of that trilogy, right?
Me: That’s right! I saw Glass in theaters twice. I loved it, a lot of folks hated it.
Patron: Why?
Me: Well, because it’s a dumb movie. But what the reviewers, in my opinion, missed is that Unbreakable and Split also had the same style of dumbness. But that doesn’t matter to me if the work is emotionally authentic, which all three of them were. Just think: if 15 minutes into Unbreakable, Bruce Willis tested out the question of “am I a superhero?” by poking himself with a knife, or getting a vaccine, or something like that, the movie would immediately end.
Patron: Or if he remembered that he ripped the door off the car.
Me: Or if he remembered that he’s never been sick. David Dunn is the king of being self-unaware. But none of that matters, because it’s a great movie about self-discovery.
Patron: Interesting. I think I’ll check out Glass next week.
Me: Good choice.
