Me, Jilly, Cait, and Lexi are hanging out with a Ukrainian family. Technically, we’re watching Thor: The Dark World, but why would we pay attention to that?
Ukrainian Dad: …so, when you sneeze, you say?
Cait: Bless you.
Ukrainian Dad: In Russian, we say Будьте здоровы, which means, ahh… “Get well” or “Be healthy.”
Lexi: That makes sense. Gesundheit just means “health”.
Cait: Spanish, too. Salud is health.
Jilly: And then in Japan, if someone sneezes, you don’t acknowledge it. At all. It’s like, ACHOO. And then silence.
Cait: That’s weird.
Me: Is it as weird as English? Where we shove religious rituals into every-damn-thing? Achoo- THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU.
Everyone in the room makes crosses with their fingers.
Me: We’re the weird ones.
