Movie Rights and Monarchy

Friend: Have you seen the new Aquaman?

Me: I definitely do not care.

Friend: Whaaat?

Me: All the DC movies have been terrible.

Friend: Well yeah, but… that trailer!

Me: Looked pretty bad, honestly.

Friend: Well, I haven’t seen it yet, but… you didn’t like the Christopher Nolan Batman?

Me: Loved it, but that series is over a decade old now. They rebooted in 2013.

Friend: What about Daredevil?

Me: The 2003 one with Ben Affleck?

Friend: Yeah! That’s DC, right?

Me: No, that’s old-school Marvel, back when they were selling their copyrights to Fox and Sony and Universal.

Friend: …

Me: Right, you mostly watch indie movies. Okay, buckle up because this is about to get weird:

Me: [long, complex tale about how Marvel was going bankrupt and sold all their movie rights. For the uninitiated, here’s an incomplete guide: http://www.thegeektwins.com/2017/12/visual-guide-to-marvel-live-action.html . It gets more complicated all the time.]

Friend: I’m not sure I understood all that.

Me: That’s okay. It’s really complex. I was born and raised in pop culture, and I still struggle with it sometimes.

Friend: That’s like… trying to explain the succession of English monarchy. It’s interesting that Mary, Queen of Scots had a better claim to the throne than [long story about English Monarchy].

Me: I’m not sure I understood all that.

Friend: Now we understand each other.
