Normalizing

I’ve been racking my brain thinking about what to post for today. I want to keep to the theme of abortion for a while, because I want to keep the subject in peoples’ minds for a while. Every day it gets a little harder to do that because nobody seems to be talking about it anymore.

Previously in American politics, multiple states making a concerted effort to get a case up to the supreme court that might overturn a landmark decision would have been news for months.

It’s been less than a week and I already see that the people close to me have moved on to the next atrocity.

We’re in the middle of a trade war. We might be going to war-war. Trump said something horrific today. Trump tweeted something awful today. More more more more more. There’s always more. Something new to think about. Something new to distract us.

The abortion “debate”- if you can even call it that with any integrity- is a direct assault on the US population by its government. This is different. This is big. This is Brett-Kavanaugh-on-the-Supreme-Court big, perhaps even bigger.

We can’t afford to move on to the next offense. We have to fixate on something if we’re going to fight back. It’s not enough to say “oh, the country’s going to shit” when our collective votes are why we’re in our current situation. And we can’t afford to get drowned by the onslaught of bad news day after day after day.

This is the new normal. You can say “don’t normalize” all you like, but normal is normal. Normal is not inherently good or bad- it’s just normal. And it’s up to us to change what “normal” means.

Jilly and I haven’t had the time to get shooting videos yet, but we’re working on some great scripts.
