Oh, The Places You’ll Boldly Go

At Camden Comic Con, I met an associate of mine, Glenn Hauman– Vice President of ComicMix. I mean, I met a whole bunch of folks, but this is a story about just one of them.

Me: …so what have you been working on lately?

Glenn: We got sued.

Me: By who?!

Glenn: The Suess Estate.

Me: Why?!

Glenn: This:

(Glenn pulled out an iPad and showed me a few pages. This book is a loving tribute to both Star Trek and Oh, the Places You’ll Go)

Me: This is beautiful. Why would the Seuss Estate sue over this?

Glenn: They have more money than they know what to do with.

Me: Do they know that this very clearly falls under Fair Use?

Glenn: I would think so. But they have more money than they know what to do with. We won the lawsuit, but they’re appealing it. They said they’ll take it to the Supreme Court if they have to.

Me: But why?

Glenn: I suspect this is driven by Theodore Giesel’s widow. Now, she died last December, but before she did, she liked to drive around in this car with a vanity plate- I kid you not- that said “GRINCH”.

Me: Fuck you, you’re making that up.

He wasn’t.

Glenn: I’m serious! So we had to set up a GoFundMe to pay for the legal fees. In the end, we’ll be fine, but we needed some money up-front. So I wrote our whole campaign in meter.
