FRIDAY, JULY 20TH
The Eisner Awards are commonly referred to as “The Oscars of the comics industry” and for good reason. They’re long, boring, and have major emotional moments. Everyone who goes is super loving and supportive, but by the end of it we all just want to get back to our respective hotels.
After all was said and done, I saw a unique opportunity. See, I’ve been working for Josh O’Neill of Locust Moon and Beehive Comics for about 6 years now, and in that time I might have mentioned my Dad once or 10,000 times. Given that they’re both professionals who deal in obscure-ish art books, I think it’s finally time they met.
Me: Josh! Congratulations on the Eisner*!
Josh: Thanks, buddy!
Me: I’d like you to meet my Dad, Mike.
Josh: Oh, wow, it’s so nice to finally meet you!
Dad: Matt’s told me a lot about you.
Josh: You raised a great kid.
Me, internally: Awwwww shucks
Dad: Well, I did my best. I think he turned out pretty great.
Me, actually blushing: Awwwwwwwwwww shucks
Josh: [More talking about me being great]
Dad: [More agreeing with Josh’s assertion that I am great]
Me: Okay I’m actually going to melt into a puddle and cry let’s get backtoourhotelbyeJosh
*Josh and others won the Best Digital Comic award for their book, “Marley’s Ghost” by Harvey Kurtzman, which is brilliant and you should all buy it right now
