The Matrix

Me: So, I rewatched the Matrix the other day. And, I had this feeling. Like there was something about it I wasn’t getting.

Me: Like, you know how something resonates emotionally? And you’re not sure why?

Me: Like, everyone- everyone– loves the Matrix. Except, like, my mom and she doesn’t count.

Me: So anyway, I just can’t shake this feeling. Like there’s a piece of the puzzle that I don’t have.

Me: And then, the movie ended, and it hit me like a brick.

Me: See, the first thing you see when the credits roll is “Directed by THE WACHOWSKI BROTHERS”

Me: And all of a sudden, it made perfect sense!

Me: The Matrix is two trans women experiencing all kinds of weird and foreign feelings that they didn’t yet know how to articulate, taking those feelings and translating them into a sci-fi concept about oppression.

Me: It’s brilliant, because it makes those feelings of not being sure that you are who you’re supposed to be accessible to a HUGE audience!

Friend, who is trans: So let me get this straight

Friend: That movie is 20 years old, and the Wachowskis came out in like, the mid to late-2000s…

Friend: and you JUST figured that out?

Me: …y-yes?

Friend: We’re fucking doomed.
